Nestled in the heart of Dorset, Dorchester is a vibrant town that boasts a rich history and stunning landscapes. For dog owners, the area is an oasis of walking options that welcome both two-legged and four-legged adventurers. With scenic walking paths, historical landmarks, and rolling countryside, there is no shortage of exciting places for Fido to explore. In this chapter, I will highlight some of the best dog walks within walking distance of Dorchester, including Maiden Castle, Poundbury Hill Fort, the River Frome, and Came Down.

Maiden Castle

A trip to Dorchester is not complete without a hike at Maiden Castle, one of the largest Iron Age hill forts in Europe. This impressive site spans approximately 47 acres and features a fascinating history that dates back over 3,000 years.

As you hike to the summit, you'll be in awe of the amazing panoramic views that stretch across the stunning Dorset countryside. The expansive grassy areas allow your dog to roam freely, sniffing its way through the natural wonders. However, be sure to keep your dog on a lead where required, as the area is home to sheep, and an array of fabulous wildlife, including birds of prey and hares! On warmer days, be sure to bring water along to keep your furry friend hydrated during the adventure. Click here for location.

Poundbury Hill Fort

Located on the edge of Dorchester, Poundbury Hill Fort is middle bronze age hill fort that offers a pleasant and historical dog walk. The short, steep climb up the hill rewards walkers with stunning views overlooking Dorchester and the rolling hills of the surrounding area.

The paths around the fields here are well-trodden and the area is suitable for dogs of all sizes but be mindful and respectful of the cows, who are often grazing. They're used to dog walkers but it's advisable to give them a wide berth. If you head down the hill, you'll find the River Frome at the bottom, where your dog can enjoy a refreshing dip to cool off on warmer days. The historic significance of this site, evidenced by the 20,000-year-old artifacts found in the vicinity, adds to the charm of your walk. Click here for location.

The River Frome

Walking along the River Frome is a serene choice for those who want a leisurely stroll with their dogs. Leaving the bustling town environment behind you you can head out north towards Charminster or East towards Stinsford. In either direction, you can enjoy a peaceful escape away, taking in miles of wonderful scenery. The riverbanks are adorned with lush greenery and vibrant wildflowers, creating an idyllic setting. The river is a haven for wildlife including otters, woodpeckers and kingfishers, as well as herons, ducks and swans, so you're in for a treat if you stay quiet and alert; but keep a close eye on your dog, as they'll likely see them before you do!

The flat, accessible pathways make this area suitable for all dog breeds, including older or less active pets, and provide ample opportunity for them to cool off, particularly during the warmer months. However, be careful of water levels and strong currents following heavy rain, and pop your dog on a lead if their love of water could get them into trouble! Head to Stinsford for a good place to park or head off direct from Dorchester town centre. Click here for location.

Came Down

Came Down offers an expansive environment for dogs and their owners. With its wide open spaces, rolling hills and woodland paths, this area takes you off the beaten track and deep into the Dorset countryside. The location boasts over 200 acres of land, ensuring plenty of room for both you and your dog to enjoy the great outdoors and if you're feeling energetic it's a great place to run with your dog and get some great exercise.

The trails are well-marked, allowing you to choose routes based on your dog's energy levels but be aware of deer which are prevalent here, and in the presence of livestock, particularly in the fields, keep your dog on a lead for safety. As a reward for their good behavior, bring some treats to celebrate a fun-filled session outdoors. Click here for a good starting point.

Thorncombe & Puddletown Woods

For a woodland experience, Thorncombe & Puddletown Woods can be the perfect destination. Featuring a network of paths that weave through tall trees, this area provides a refreshing change of scenery, especially on warmer days when shaded walks are more comfortable.

Home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, these woods offer ample sensory stimulation for dogs. You may even spot deer or other wildlife while walking. The well-maintained paths make it easy to navigate, but always keep an eye on your dog to avoid any ticks that might be lurking in the underbrush. Click here for a good starting point.
